Kean Honors Scholar-Athletes

UNION, N.J (4/13/11) – The Kean University Department of Athletics recently inducted its 2011 class into Chi Alpha Sigma and honored more than 165 student-athletes in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day on Wednesday, April 6, at the Scholar-Athlete Honors Luncheon.

Kean inducted 15 members into its fourth class of the National College Athlete Honor Society, joining the other 44 student-athletes who were inducted over the last three years.  Student-athletes must have passed at least 56 credits with a 3.4 grade point average.

The University also celebrated National Student-Athlete Day with a Scholar-Athlete Honors Luncheon, honoring a total of 64 student-athletes who have passed a minimum of 56 credits with at least a 3.00 grade point average.  Those student-athletes invited 37 faculty and staff members, who were also recognized for playing an instrumental role in their education.

An additional 103 student-athletes were honored as Honorable Mention after also attaining a 3.00 grade point average with less than 56 credits earned.

National Student-Athlete Day has been celebrated annually on April 6 since 1987.  It is America’s day to celebrate outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, while having made significant contributions to the community.  It is also a time to acknowledge the teachers who make it possible for young people to find the balance between academics and athletics.

The National College Athlete Honor Society was founded at DePauw University on May 17, 1996, as an honorary college athletic society for recognition of high academic achievers and sport letter winners at the college level.

Chi Alpha Sigma is composed of 209 colleges and universities representing 40 states.  Kean became the seventh school in New Jersey with a charter, joining Fairleigh Dickinson University, Montclair State University, Monmouth University, Ramapo College, Rutgers University and Seton Hall University.  Georgian Court University, Rowan University and Richard Stockton College have since added chapters of Chi Alpha Sigma.
