UConn's Auriemma Addresses Kean Student-Athletes
UNION, N.J. (10/30/07) - The Kean University Department of Athletics hosted University of Connecticut Head Women's Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma on Tuesday, October 30, to speak to the University's student-athletes on what it takes to be a champion and being successful on and off the playing field.
A five-time Naismith National Coach of the Year, Auriemma has guided the Huskies to five national championships (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) and two undefeated seasons (1995 and 2002).
Prior to his arrival at UConn, the Huskies had posted just one
winning season in its 11-year history. Since taking over the
reins of the program in August 1985, Auriemma has 21-straight
winning seasons and has coached 10 First-Team Kodak All-Americans.
In 22 seasons, his career record is 621-120 (.838) and he was the fastest NCAA Division I coach to reach 600 career wins and the second fastest to eclipse the 500-win plateau.
In addition to coaching some of the nation's best women's basketball players, every recruited freshman that has played for Auriemma at UConn and has completed her eligibility in a Husky uniform has obtained her undergraduate degree.
Auriemma has been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of
Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and has guided UConn
to 14 straight Big East regular season or tournament titles.
Prior to speaking to the student-athletes of all 18 varsity sports at Kean, Auriemma also met with the women's basketball team. The Cougars return four starters from a team that advanced to the Elite Eight and captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference title a year ago.
