Cougars Top Denison, 7-6
Whittier, Calif. (3/12/11) – The Kean University baseball team got back on track as they defeated Denison University in a neutral matchup this afternoon by the final score of 7-6.
The Cougars got things going with four runs in their half of the third inning. Senior Ken Gregory drove in two with a double and two batters later senior Nick Nolan repeated the pattern for the early 4-0 lead.
Big Red (1-5) got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the third as Kevin Teague drew a bases loaded walk.
It was Kean's turn in the top of the fifth as Nolan (pictured left) launched his first homerun of the season, a three run blast for a 7-1 lead.
But Denison kept chipping away and after scoring a single run in the fifth, they plated three more in the sixth, aided by two Cougar miscues.
Big Red scored a single run in the bottom of the ninth and using small ball put the tying run at third base, but sophomore Sam Fourre closed the door with a strikeout to end the threat for his first save of the year.
Offensively junior Lee Cavico was 3-for-5 while Nolan was also 3-for-5 with five RBI. With today's RBI, Nolan is now the all-time career leader in that category with 153.
Southpaw Ryan Zamorsky earned his first win of the season. He allowed four hits and four walks while striking out five in five plus innings. Fourre earned the save with one inning of work.
