Herget Blanks #7/9 Eastern Connecticut, 5-0
Union, N.J. (3/10/12) – Junior Kevin Herget picked up his third win of the season after scattering six singles over eight innings as the #2/3 Kean University baseball team picked up their eighth win of the season as they blanked #7/9 Eastern Connecticut State University, 5-0, Saturday afternoon.
Herget (3-0), who has not allowed a run yet this season, fanned nine and allowed one walk as Kean improved to 8-2. The loss is the first for the Warriors who fall to 4-1.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first as senior Steve Sanguiliano reached on a two-out walk. He would later move to third off a single from sophomore Joe O'Connor and later scored on a wild pitch. Senior Dylan Laguna made it 2-0 with an RBI double down the line. Kean would add to their lead with a run in the third as O'Connor lofted a sacrifice fly, scoring senior Vinny Galya who reached on a leadoff single.
Kean would close out the day's scoring with two more in the seventh as sophomore Shane Alvarez hit his first collegiate homerun, a two-run shot, for the final of 5-0.
Herget (pictured left) got out of trouble in the eighth as the Warriors loaded the bases with one out. He would strike out the next two batters to keep the shutout intact. Sanguiliano closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to preserve the win.
Offensively Laguna had the only multi-hit game of the day as he was 2-for-4 with a double.
Starter Andrew Merritt suffered his first loss of the year for Eastern Connecticut. He allowed three runs and six hits in three innings of work.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday when they host St. Joseph's College-Long Island at 3 p.m.
