Alvernia Tops Baseball, 7-1
Reading, Pa. (3/27/12) – Alvernia University used two, three-run innings to push past the #4 Kean University baseball team by the final of 7-1, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Despite out-hitting the Crusaders, 10-8, the Cougars now fall to 13-5 this season while the win improves Alvernia to 14-6-1.
The Crusaders took a 3-0 lead in their half of the second as designated hitter Chris Gehris reached on a one-out triple. Later with two outs, catcher Kevin Bailey drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single. A single followed to put runners on first and second and outfielder Cody Younker delivered the inning’s second triple, driving in two, to put Alvernia on top, 3-0.
A single run in the fourth made the score 4-0 before Kean scored their lone run of the contest in the top of the sixth. Senior Eddie Jennings led off the frame with a single and later in the inning sophomore Joe O’Connor (pictured left) recorded an RBI double to break up the shutout. The Crusaders added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the same inning.
Southpaw Ryan Zamorsky (3-1) suffered the loss. He allowed seven runs, three earned, in five and a third innings. He walked one and struck out three. Junior Kevin Herget tossed two and two thirds innings of relief allowing a single while fanning six. Steve Price (3-0) earned the win for Alvernia. He tossed seven innings allowing one run and eight hits, striking out seven.
Offensively sophomore Shane Alvarez and O’Connor were both 3-for-4 with a double. Jennings finished the day with two hits.
Kean returns to action on Thursday when they host York College (Pa.) at 3:30 p.m.
