Baseball Rallies Past Stevens, 8-5

Union, N.J. (2/17/18) – The Kean University baseball team used a four run eighth inning to turn a one run deficit into an 8-5 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Frank LoGiudice led the Kean (2-0) offense with a 4-for-5 day in the leadoff spot with a run scored and two RBI.  For the Ducks (0-1), Alex Detweiler recorded three RBI on two hits.

In the wild eighth the Cougars used a leadoff single from Andrew Ferrara, and walks to Steve Santigate and pinch-hitter Tim Huxen to load the bases with one out.  Kean tied things up at five-all with a balk and took the lead as Santigate swiped home on a strikeout.  The Cougars added insurance with an RBI singles from Conner DeForge and LoGiudice.

With one out and one on in the top of the ninth for Stevens, Jean Sapini entered for his first collegiate appearance and he struck out two sandwiched around a single to pick up a save on the day.

Sophomore Justin Hernandez earned the win in relief.  He allowed one run and three hits with three walks and four strikeouts in three and a third innings of work.

Kean is scheduled to take on the College at Brockport on Sunday at 2 p.m.
