Union, N.J. (2/24/18) – The Kean University baseball team used a six-run seventh inning to turn the tables and top FDU-Florham by the final of 8-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Rookie Justin Diefenbach (1-0) earned the win with a six inning relief appearance. He allowed just one run while scattering five hits. Diefenbach fanned nine and walked no one.
The Devils (0-1) used one pitch in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead as Reynaldo Diaz launched a homer to left, plating Nick DeAngelis Jr. and AJ Yurista who reached via a single and walk respectively.
FDU extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth as Ben Dranow dunked a two-out RBI single down the rightfield line.
The momentum shifted to Kean in the seventh the Cougars strung together three straight infield hits with one out to load the bases. Two wild pitches later the Cougars were within one at 4-3. Polizzano would tie things up as he crossed the plate on an overthrow to second trying to catch Matt Krupa, who reached via a walk. An RBI single from Jimi Fitzgerald and an RBI bunt from Brandon Johannessen rounded out the inning, giving Kean a 7-4 lead.
Doubles from Mike Fidanza and Krupa in the eighth added insurance for what would be the final.
Christian Capuano suffered the loss. He allowed six run and six hits in an inning of work.
For the Cougars, five players had multi-hits on the afternoon.
Kean returns to action on Sunday when they host Gwynedd Mercy University.
