Union, N.J. (5/5/18) – The Kean University baseball team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Rutgers-Camden by the final of 8-3 in Saturday action of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament.
With the win the Cougars (21-22) advance to championship Sunday. Kean will face Rowan University in an elimination game at noon. The winner of that game will face Ramapo College in a winner take all game at 4 p.m.
Down 3-1 in the seventh, the Cougars put a four-spot on the board to take the lead for good. Steve Santigate started off the inning on second after two miscues by the Scarlet Raptors (26-15). Senior Frank Urso then reached on a fielders' choice bunt putting runners on the corners with no outs. Derek Walker then singled home Santigate to pull within one. Two batters later, Chris Vetter singled to knot the game at three-all. Frank LoGiudice walked to load the bases and Matt Krupa put Kean ahead with an RBI single of his own. John Carello rounded out the scoring with a sac fly for a 5-3 lead.
Kean added insurance in the ninth plating three more. Nick Polizzano delivered a two RBI single to wrap up the scoring.
LoGiudice earned his first collegiate win. He allowed three runs while scattering 10 hits and walking no one. Jean Sapini picked up this third save tossing two and two thirds innings of scoreless ball.
Offensively LoGiudice was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Krupa and Polizzano each had two RBI.
Today's win was the first against Rutgers-Camden this season for Kean. Previously the Cougars fell 17-6 and 17-0.
