OCEAN, N.J. (3/11/09) - For the sixth straight
year, the Kean University football team participated in the
National Education Association's Read Across America Day in
celebration of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss' birthday.
Originally scheduled for Monday, March 2, snow cancellations forced the Cougar football team to instead travel to Wayside Elementary School of Ocean Township School District on Monday, March 9. Under third-year Head Coach Dan Garrett, 17 players and coaches visited 32 different classrooms to read books by Dr. Seuss and discuss the importance of reading to the special education and pre-K though fourth grade students.
NEA launched the Read Across America program in 1997. The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss, who epitomizes a love of learning. Dr. Seuss's use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills they need to be successful.
