Bottinelli Scores Two as Field Hockey Earns Seventh Shutout

UNION, N.J. (10/1/13) – Freshman Bridgette Bottinelli scored twice and the Cougar defense was dominant again as the Kean University field hockey program earned its seventh shutout of the season 2-0 over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham  on Tuesday night.

The contest began cautiously with not a single stat input – shot, corner or substitution - for either side in the first nine minutes. FDU finally ended the stalemate by earning a penalty corner. The Devils (4-5) took the first shot off that corner but were held to just one more in the opening period.

Kean (11-1) earned its first goal 18 minutes in. Sophomore Marissa Robinson purposefully fired a shot wide from the left side of circle. Bottinelli dove and re-directed the ball into the Devil net for the third goal of her debut season.

The game went into halftime with Kean holding a 1-0 lead.

Senior defender Diane Boccella (pictured left) added to her team-leading total with a defensive save with 25 minutes to go in the second half to keep Kean's 1-0 advantage. The shot came after an FDU corner; goalkeeper Katie DiCarlo saved the initial shot but the ensuing shot from the rebound had to be stymied by Boccella.

With 20 minutes remaining, the Cougars gained the zone and got the ball in deep near the goal crease. There was a huge pileup in front, but senior Korri Thompson was able to shove the ball to Bottinelli who coaxed it just over the goalline for her second score of the game.

The Devils threw the pressure on in the endgame, but DiCarlo and her defense did well. FDU took five shots in the final 10 minutes, but Boccella came up with another defensive save on a corner and DiCarlo made three final saves to deliver the shutout.

The Cougars will host Ramapo College on Saturday at 1 p.m. before playing five of its last six regular-season contests on the road.
