Men's Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss to Stockton, 70-67
Galloway, N.J. (1/25/12) – Sophomore Michael Burton scored a game-high 20 points as the Kean University men's basketball team suffered an overtime loss to Richard Stockton College by the final of 70-67, Wednesday evening in conference action.
In the second half of action Stockton sprinted out to a 13 point lead (45-32) before the Cougars started to chip away. Kean used a 13-3 run in the last four minutes to knot the game at 59 with five seconds left. Senior Andrew Kirey had two treys in the run while sophomore Ryan Duffy sent the game into overtime with a jumper in the final seconds. Stockton had one last attempt to win in regulation, but the three-pointer fell off the rim as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
Stockton took the lead for good by scoring the first five points of overtime. The Cougars had a chance to force double OT but a three-pointer by Anthony Gibson was off the mark and Stockton held on for the 70-67 win.
The Cougars controlled the tempo during a back and forth first half, with Kean holding as much as a five point advantage. Kean led 24-21 before consecutive baskets by gave the Ospreys a 25-24 lead at the break.
Kirey finished with 17 points including 5-9 from behind the arc.
Kean returns to action on Saturday when they host New Jersey City University at 3 p.m.
