STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (1/15/18)- Justin Watson finished with 17 points and knocked down four triples as the Kean University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to the College of Staten Island, 89-77 on Monday afternoon.
Adeola Latunji totaled a game-high 27 points for the Dolphins who improve to 8-7 overall. Adrian Baucum finished with 15 points and knocked down three triples for the Cougars who fall to 5-11 overall.
The Cougars and Dolphins played a back and forth contest, which saw 12 ties and 12 lead changes. The offense was on display in the first half as both Kean and Staten Island shot above 50.0% from the floor and behind the arc. Watson scored 12 of his 17 points in the opening stanza, while CSI had three starters in double figures by halftime. Keenan Williams Jr. knocked down a jumper with less than one minute remaining, and the Cougars trailed 50-48 halftime.
The beginning of the second half mirrored the first, as Kean stayed within five points of CSI. Michael Summerer made a layup with 11:20 remaining to even the contest at 63-63.
After that basket, the Cougars offense seemed to stall as Staten Island ended the contest on a 26-14 run, including nine unanswered after Summerer's layup.
Micah Kerr totaled 12 points and seven rebounds, while Summerer added 10 points. Christian Taylor finished with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Robert Rossiter chipped in with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Head Coach Rob Kurzinsky and the Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17th, hosting the Red Hawks of Montclair State University at 8:00 p.m.
