Late Rally Falls Short for Men’s Basketball Against Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. (2/7/18)- Adrian Baucum scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds as the Kean University men's basketball team came up short in a 71-69 loss to Rowan University on Wednesday evening.

TJ Booth totaled 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Profs who improve to 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Justin Watson finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Cougars who fall to 6-17 overall and 4-12 in the NJAC.

Rowan used a 13-0 run to put the Cougars into a 15 point deficit midway through the opening stanza. Despite trailing for most of the first half, Kean outscored Rowan 20-14 in the final 10:08. Baucum scored 10 of the Cougars final 14 points, including a layup with nine seconds to play. A late technical foul and two free throws from Rob DePersia allowed Rowan a 42-33 halftime advantage. The Profs were held scoreless from the field for the final 2:38 of the first half.

Rowan opened the second half increasing their lead to 52-39 before the Cougars made their move. Kean took advantage of a 20-9 run, which pulled the Profs lead to 61-59 with 6:30 remaining. Keenan Williams Jr. knocked down two triples during the 8:51 run. After Rowan pushed the lead back to 66-59, the Profs went scoreless from the floor for the final 5:16 allowing Kean to chip away at the lead.

With two and a half minutes to play, Kean trailed Rowan, 70-65. Michael Summerer and Jeff Cooper would make back-to-back layup's to cut Rowan's lead to 70-69 with 1:36 remaining. Cooper's layup was started by a Micah Kerr block on the defensive end. Despite cutting the lead to one, Kean went scoreless in the final 1:36 and Nick DePersia's free throw with 16 seconds, proved to be the difference when the final buzzer sounded.

N. DePersia finished with 14 points for Rowan. Cooper and Kerr both totaled 10 points apiece in the loss for Kean.

Head Coach Rob Kurzinsky and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10th, hosting the Ospreys of Stockton University at 1:00 p.m.
