Men's Lacrosse Rallies Past Castleton, 8-5

Castleton, Vt. (4/4/11) - The Kean University men's lacrosse team scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter to break a five-all tie to defeat Castleton State College, 8-5, Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

Freshman Todd Petrone led Kean (6-3) offensively with a hat trick, including two in the final quarter. Freshman Richard Cheifitz notched two goals and two assists dishing out both of his helpers on Kean's final two goals of the contest. Tom Clifford added one goal and two assists while Ryan Buerkle and Brad Mills scored a goal each.

For Castleton (3-5), sophomore Nohea King and freshman Alex Green paced the offense with two goals apiece. Kenneth Bourneuf led the team in the assist department with two while Adam Groot added one helper.

The Cougars opened up the scoring at 9:52 as Clifford took advantage of the man-up advantage and ripped a shot past Castleton goaltender Dave DeGhetto for his 10th marker of the season. Two minutes and 51 seconds later, Cheifitz netted his first of two goals on the afternoon finishing on a beautiful feed from Clifford past DeGhetto for a 2-0 advantage. Mills made it 3-0 at 6:53 as Child found the sophomore wide open in front of the crease for his fourth of the season. Petrone (pictured left) pushed Kean's gap to 4-0 at 3:30 pushing a shot behind DeGhetto for his seventh marker of the season.

On a man-up opportunity at 2:37 of the first, King corralled a slick pass from Groot and rifled a shot for a 4-1 deficit.  Late in the second, Green notched his 18th goal of the season finishing on a nice feed from Bourneuf to cut the gap to 4-2 before halftime.

After Cheifitz's ninth goal of the season at 11:01 of the third, King and Green scored back-to-back goals only 39 seconds apart to make it a 5-4 contest.

Castleton tied up the game late in the third (1:52) as Lane Zierten – who made a save on Owen Hartman's initial shot, stickhandled the ball into his own net to even the score at 5-5.

The Cougars responded in the fourth scoring three unanswered goals, spearheaded by Petrone and Cheifitz (pictured right), to close out the contest. Petrone took a feed from Nick Angrisani from behind the cage and deposited it into the back of the net for his eighth of the season. Buerkle followed with his seventh goal of the season at 10:18 quick-sticking a shot past DeGhetto to make it 7-5. Petrone capped Kean's scoring with his ninth of the season at 8:04 on a pass from Cheifitz, his fifth assist of the season.

Ziertan made 13 saves in net to improve to 6-3 overall on the season. DeGhetto stopped 17 shots in net for the Spartans. Kean outshot Castleton, 48-28, including a 17-6 margin in the last quarter.
