Final Quarter Lifts Cougars Past Richard Stockton, 11-7

UNION, N.J. (4/19/11) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team broke a 7-7 tie with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Richard Stockton College, 11-7, in Skyline Conference action on Tuesday evening.

Rookie Todd Petrone (pictured left) scored two of his five goals in the final quarter for the Cougars (8-5, 3-2 Skyline).

For the Ospreys (3-10, 2-3 Skyline), goalkeeper Tim Wolcott stopped 10 shots.

Petrone gave the Cougars the lead for good, scoring off the assist from sophomore Tom Clifford.  Freshman Richard Cheifitz and junior Nick Angrisani extended the lead to 10-7 with back-to-back goals just 45 seconds apart, before Petrone closed out the scoring with the final goal of the game with 5:45 remaining.

The opening three quarters of action were back-and-forth, as Stockton took a 4-3 lead when sophomore attack Drew Flagler opened the second quarter with a goal.  However, the Cougars scored the final three goals of the half to take a 6-4 lead at the break.

Osprey senior midfielder Matt Bologno scored back-to-back goals to start the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6 and the two teams exchanged goals just eight seconds apart later in the quarter for the 7-7 tie heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.

The physical contest saw each team penalized 10 times for more than 20 combined minutes and the Cougars would capitalize scoring the final three goals a man-up.

Cheifitz (pictured right) finished with three goals for the Cougars, while Angrisani and Clifford combined for two goals and five assists.  Sophomore goalkeeper Lane Zierten made 12 saves. 

For the Ospreys, Bologno scored a team-high three goals and junior attack Chris Ordway added two goals and an assist.

The Cougars close out the Skyline regular season on Friday, April 22, when they travel to Montclair State University.
