Men’s Lacrosse Opens Home Slate with 20-10 Victory

UNION, N.J. (2/27/13) – Junior Richard Cheifitz scored a double hat trick as the Kean University men's lacrosse team doubled up Vassar College 20-10 in the program's first home game of 2013. Cheifitz finished with eight points to lead the Cougar offense.

Belying the ultimate result of the game, the first quarter was actually a defensive struggle. The Cougars led 2-1 after the first 15 minutes thanks to tallies by John Marcelli and Mike Sheehan. Sheehan (pictured left) would finish with three assists on the night.

In the second period the Kean offense came alive and lit up the Brewers with seven goals on 17 shots. Cheifitz secured a hat trick through his work in the second quarter alone and Dylan Conte ended a 7-0 run by the Cougars with a goal at 3:46.

Lane Zierten played the first 30 minutes between the pipes and stopped two shots to earn the win. Kean used three goalkeepers – Dino Vitale, Garret VanDoren and George Bogner – in the second half. Vitale and Bogner had four saves each and Vitale even picked up an assist in the fourth quarter.

After a 5-5 third quarter, Kean got another big scoring run (8-0) to put the game out of reach. The Cougars finished with 50 shots and forced twice as many turnovers as they committed.

Kean will be back on the field on Saturday, when the team hosts Western Connecticut State University at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field.
