Men’s Lacrosse Overpowers West Conn

UNION, N.J. (3/2/13) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team used a pair of four-goal outbursts by Richard Cheifitz (pictured left) and Sean Bobal  to streak past Western Connecticut State University in a 17-10 victory on Saturday.

It was a game of scoring runs; John Foristall scored the first two goals of the game for the Colonials before Kean ripped off five-straight scores from five different players to take a 5-2 lead at the start of the second quarter.

West Conn then scored five of the next six, with a Brad Mills goal sandwiched in between for the Cougars. The teams were tied at the break and Kean fell behind by a goal just 19 seconds into the second half.

That early goal seemed to fire up the home team, as Kean commenced a decisive 8-0 run with a goal by Cheifitz from Tom Clifford at 11:57 of the third. The unanswered goals did not end until Bobal scored from John Marcelli with 10:28 left in the fourth. Clifford netted perhaps the most noteworthy of the bunch with a long bouncing shot from the center of the field at 3:24 of the third.

Kean was able to hold possession well throughout the game, and that proved to be the difference. The Cougars won 18-of-28 faceoffs thanks to Mike Criscitello (8-12) and Jamar Thigpen (7-11), and did not fail a clear attempt until four minutes remained in the game. Lane Zierten earned the win between the pipes with 11 saves on the day.

Kean will head to Drew University on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Rangers.
