Second Half Surge Sends Men's Lacrosse Past DeSales

Union, N.J. (3/19/14) – The Kean University men's lacrosse team used a second half outburst to pull past DeSales University by the final of 10-5 Wednesday evening in a soggy, cold non-conference matchup.

Senior Dino Vitale (pictured left) led the Cougars in net as he stopped 18 shots as Kean improved to 6-1 this spring.  Junior Ryan Loughlin led the offense for DeSales (0-5) as he tallied two goals and two assists in the loss.

Senior Jacob Bernier got the game going with a goal just 50 seconds into the contest, giving the Bulldogs their only lead of the night.  Sophomore Anthony Carpenter answered two minutes later to knot the game at one-all and Kean took the lead for good near the end of the first quarter as senior John Marcelli found the back of the net off of one of senior Richard Cheifitz's three assists on the night.  The second quarter saw little scoring as each team traded a single goal as the Cougars held on to a slim 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

The Cougar offense, like the rain, poured it on in the third quarter, netting four straight over the first six minutes of action.  DeSale's Loughlin ended the run at the 4:03 mark, marking the score at 7-3 after three quarters.  Kean sealed the win with three straight goals, including two from sophomore Matt Speciale, to earn their sixth win of the season.

Speciale finished with a game-high three goals while Cheifitz finished with a goal and three assists.

The Bulldogs held a 50-33 shot advantage while Kean dominated the faceoffs, with 16-of-19 wins.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday when they travel to Cortland, N.Y. to face SUNY Potsdam at 4 p.m.
