BRONX, N.Y. (4/12/14) – John Marcelli and Richard Cheifitz both recorded multiple-point games to pace the Kean University men's lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over Skyline Conference rival Mt. St. Vincent on Saturday afternoon. It is Kean's 10th win in a row.
Cheifitz (pictured left) had a hand in the first three Cougar goals on the day, as he opened the scoring, assisted on the second goal, and scored his second goal of the game to put the Cougars ahead 3-1. Kean never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game.
After Cheifitz's second goal, Mike Criscitello, took the next faceoff, raced the length of the field and buried a goal just 10 seconds later. The Dolphins mounted a small comeback attempt in the first quarter, getting back to within 5-3, but Jeff Christiano answered 49 seconds later to put the Cougars back up three goals.
In the second half, the Cougars and Dolphins traded goals, as Matt Speciale and Christiano tickled the twine for the Cougars, and John Petito and Pat McEnaney had goals for the Dolphins. McEaney's marker came with two ticks left in the third stanza.
Marcelli completed a rare natural hat trick, recording his three goals in succession over the course of the third and fourth quarters. McEnaney had two goals late in the game for the Dolphins, but it only trimmed the final margin and the Cougars returned home with a 10-6 victory.
The Cougars held a distinct edge in the faceoff department, as they won 15 of 19 draws, with Criscitello winning 12. Dino Vitale had a strong game in net for the Cougars, making eight saves. Kyle Kalibat and Ben Gashi combined to make 22 saves for Dolphins.
The Cougars are now 12-1 and 3-0 in the Skyline, while the Dolphins fell to 5-6 and are still winless in the league.
Kean will be back in action on Wednesday when the team travels to Richard Stockton College for a Skyline Conference showdown at 7 p.m.
