Men’s Lacrosse Sinks Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (3/25/17) Matt Brodley filled up the stat sheet and Ryan Sieb made a career-high 18 saves as the Kean University men's lacrosse team edged SUNY Maritime College 5-3 on Saturday. Both teams now sport identical 3-4 records and are 1-1 in the Skyline Conference.

The first quarter went by scoreless, but not for lack of trying. The teams combined for 20 shots, but Sieb and Maritime's Brendan McNally combined for 16 saves to keep both teams off the board.

The Privateers scored 35 seconds into the second period, but Brodley assisted Brian Mills for Kean's first goal and scored the next one with help from Tom Kelly to give Kean a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Cole Blackley and Tyler Roberto hooked up for another goal early in the third period, but Maritime netted the next two to knot the score with 4:03 remaining in the third.

Just over a minute later, Mills scored an unassisted goal to give Kean the lead back, 4-3.

The two teams battled for the next 16 scoreless minutes, until Brodley finally gave Kean some breathing room with less than two minutes to go in the game. Sieb and the Cougar defense held Maritime 0-for-7 on extra-man opportunities and forced 29 turnovers.

Brodley's final line included two goals, an assist, four ground balls and a caused turnover. Sieb led the team with six ground balls while earning the win in goal.

Danny Rito caused three turnovers and grabbed three ground balls. Greg Castor also forced three turnovers, and Mills scored twice. Jeremy Maybaum (pictured left) provided a spark off the bench by going 2-for-2 at the faceoff dot.

The Cougars will head to the Empire State again on Wednesday for a Skyline Conference matchup with Farmingdale State College at 7 p.m.
