UNION, N.J. (4/15/18)- Seven second half goals sparked the Kean University men's lacrosse team to their seventh straight victory with a 12-5 decision over Castleton University on Senior Day.
Mike Snellen totaled six points on three goals and three assists for the Cougars who improve to 10-2 overall. Kyle Lutinski finished with two points on one goal and one assist for the Spartans who fall to 8-6 overall.
The Cougars battled back from a 3-1 deficit to even the contest at 4-4 on a Tyler Roberto score with less than six minutes to play in the second quarter. Despite the momentum being in Castleton's favor, Snellen notched his first goal of the afternoon and Kean took the 5-4 advantage into halftime.
The Cougars responded in the second half with six unanswered goals in the third quarter, including two from Snellen and Roberto, as Kean expanded their halftime lead to 11-4 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Connor Baucom proved to be a big factor in the Cougars second half run. The junior went 8-for-10 on faceoffs in the second half after going 4-for-11 in the opening half. Baucom tallied seven groundballs with his 12 faceoffs victories. Kean was well in control when Cole Blackley notched the final goal of the afternoon in the fourth.
Blackley finished with two goals, while Andrew Yenesel totaled three points on two assists and one goal. Snellen added six groundballs, while Greg Castor and Matt Palmieri both totaled four groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Tom Kelly and Scott Royster both totaled two points on one goal and one assist as they were honored by Coach Sheiner and his staff before the game. Kelly and Royster joined by fellow seniors Mark Marchino and Peter D'Antoni. D'Antoni earned the start and made six saves, while Thomas Francy improved to 5-0 with five saves between the pipes.
Head Coach Shelley Sheiner and the Cougars will return to action in Hackettstown, N.J. on Wednesday, Apr. 18th against the Cyclones of Centenary University at 4:00 p.m.
