Hillside, N.J. (9/1/11) – The Kean University men's soccer team started off the 2011 season on the right note as they defeated John Jay College, 5-1, Thursday afternoon at the East Campus Complex.
Freshman Erickson Simeon (Haledon, N.J.) led the way for the Cougars (1-0) after scoring two goals in the win.
Junior Kharee Winslow (Piscataway, N.J.) got things started for Kean as he centered a cross from senior Dennis Correia (Elizabeth, N.J.) at the 20 yard line and shot the ball past a pulled out keeper just over three minutes into the action. The score would stay just 1-0 until Correia used a flip-throw which deflected off the goalkeeper to put the score at 2-0 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The Cougars added two quick goals in the second half as freshman Alexander Fernandez (Woodbridge, N.J.) punched it in off a close cross from junior Michael Custidiano (Hawthorne, N.J.) and Simeon followed five minutes later with his first of two on the afternoon as he dribbled around a drawn out keeper and finished the ball from the right side.
John Jay got on the board in the 74th minute as sophomore Navid Allah Morad (Balkh, Afghanistan) hit a direct kick from 20 yards out. Simeon closed out the scoring at 82:12 with Kean's fifth goal of the afternoon.
Senior Brian Haines (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) (pictured left) recorded two saves in the win.
Kean travels to Colorado for a weekend tournament beginning on Saturday.
