Men's Volleyball Sweeps Wells, CCNY in Tri-Match
UNION, N.J. (3/31/12) – In just its second season as a varsity program, the Kean University men's volleyball eclipsed 20 wins after posting its 20th and 21st wins of the season with a sweep of Wells College and City College of New York in a non-conference tri-match on Saturday afternoon.
The #14 Cougars (21-9) posted straight-set wins over Wells (25-16, 25-13, 25-15) in the opener, before closing out the match in straight sets over CCNY (25-14, 25-16, 25-17). CCNY defeated Wells (27-25, 25-21, 25-22) in straight sets in the second match of the day.
Against Wells, senior Sam Haimann (pictured left) totaled a match-high 14 kills and five service aces, while adding six digs. Senior Christian Portera added nine kills, while junior Steve Vahalla had seven kills in as many attempts in the third set alone. Rookie Ron Dunn dished out 36 assists.
In the win over CCNY, freshman John Cunningham had a match-high 12 kills and just two errors in 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage. Haimann tallied a match-high nine digs, while Vahalla added eight kills and five digs. Rookie Alex Barnhard had 35 assists.
Kean closes out the Skyline Conference regular season schedule with a chance to clinch the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a sweep of New Jersey City University and Yeshiva University in New York on Sunday afternoon.
