UNION, N.J. (1/11/17) – The Kean University men’s volleyball team will begin the season ranked No. 10 in the national polls after winning its fifth consecutive Skyline Conference crown and advancing to the NCAA Division III National Championship Final Site for the fifth-straight season.
Last year’s Cougars were one of only two teams in the nation to win more than 30 matches on the year, the other being defending National Champion SUNY New Paltz. Kean graduated only one player and will return both the Skyline Championship’s Most Outstanding Player (and All-American) Jacob Kauffman and 2016 Skyline Rookie of the Year Nicholas Buseski.
Head coach Charlie Ginex returns for his fourth season at the head of the program, and will be joined by alums Jimmy Pompeo, Ed Jedziniak and Bez Arslani on the sidelines. Despite the returning firepower, the Cougars will be young in 2017 and without a single senior on the roster.
Kean also returns First-Team All-Skyline libero Nick Breslin to what should be a deep lineup at each position on the court.
Last year’s team tied the 2015 squad for the most wins in school-history with 31. Counting the postseason, the Cougars have won 65-stright Skyline Conference matches, including the first three perfect conference campaigns for any team in Skyline history. Kean also won an NCAA match for the second time in its history during the 2016 postseason.
The Cougars will begin the season ranked 10th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association nation poll after ending the 2016 season in the same slot. Click here to see the preseason release from the AVCA.
Kean’s season begins at home on Thursday with the first day of the Kean Winter Classic. The Cougars host Endicott College in a rematch of last year’s Cougar win in the NCAA Tournament at 3 p.m.
