SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (2/4/17) – The No. 8 Kean University men's volleyball team earned its second win over a Top-10 team in a week with a 3-0 sweep of No. 6 New York University at the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts on Saturday. The match was highlighted by an epic 32-30 Kean win in the second set.
Cougar middle hitter Shayron Taylor was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Cougars with a .700 attack percentage without an error on Saturday.
Kean is now 8-3 on the year. NYU fell to 4-3.
Jared Warner also had an impressive day, with eight kills on 13 swings also without an error for a .615 average. Kevin Barrow handed out 30 assists and led the team with nine digs. The Kean defense was good all-around; Nick Breslin had eight digs and Dylan Flor (pictured left) had seven. Flor- a freshman – also led the team with nine kills and three aces.
Fellow freshman Ian Capp also ripped three aces and was in on a team-best four blocks, while Warner and Barrow added two each as the Cougars totaled an even dozen service aces in just three sets.
The dramatic second set was tied 13 different times. Kean fought off four set points before earning three-straight points. Kamil Garbowski earned a kill to tie, then teamed with Capp for a block to get the Cougars their fourth set point. An NYU error put Kean up 32-30 and put the Cougars in the driver's seat for the rest of the set. Kean went on to win 25-17 in the third.
Derrick Chiu quarterbacked the Violets with 27 assists.
Kean will have a week off before returning home to host SUNY Institute of Technology and Emmanuel College on Sunday beginning at noon.
