Wrapping Up: Men’s Volleyball 2017

UNION, N.J. (4/28/17)  The Kean University men's volleyball team earned a sixth-straight Skyline Conference Championship in 2017 and will end its tenure as a Skyline member on a 76-match league winning streak, a run that goes back to 2013. The Cougars qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Championship for the sixth-straight year and are still one of only two teams to have made the field in each of the six seasons it has been held.

Also for the sixth-straight season, the program boasted the Skyline Player of the Year. This year junior outside hitter Jacob Kauffman earned the award. He led the league in aces and was fourth in the nation in that category. He led the team in kills and points by wide margins. He was also named First-Team All-Skyline.

Joining Kauffman on the All-Skyline Team were Jared Warner (First-Team) and Shayron Taylor and Steven Zarzycki (Second-Team). Head coach Charlie Ginex made history by becoming the first Cougar coach of the program named the ECAC Coach of the Year.

Kean was paired with defending National Champion SUNY New Paltz in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, and narrowly missed taking down the Hawks in a spirited home match that was decided by a 15-13 fifth set.

Earlier in the postseason, the Cougars took down St. Joseph's College of Long Island and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Skyline Tournament to clinch the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Ian Capp was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament, marking the sixth-straight time a Kean player earned that award as well.

Kean was ranked as high as No. 7 nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll this season and finished the year with a 26-9 record. The Cougars also captured the Kean Winter Classic Championship to kick off the year with a perfect 4-0 record at the event.
