Union, N.J. (2/13/18) – The Kean University men's volleyball team picked up their first win in CVC competition with a 3-1 win over local foe Ramapo College on Tuesday night.
Kean, recently ranked #8 in the current American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 15 Poll, was led by Jacob Milnazik with a match-high 14 kills.
The Cougars (10-2, 1-1 CVC) went ahead 15-14 on a Roadrunner service error and later rode the arm of Ian Capp who landed three aces in a 5-0 run to pull away with a 25-18 set one win.
In the back and forth affair in the second stanza it was Ramapo (3-5, 1-1 CVC) who broke an 18-all tie with a kill from Conor Charlow. Kean kept close, but Eric Van Thuyne closed out the set with two straight points to even the match at one-all.
The Cougars took an early lead in the third set with a 5-0 run spurred by three kills from Milnazik to push ahead, 8-2. Back-to-back kills from Garrett Fitzsimmons pulled Ramapo within one (20-19) but Kean took advantage of two Roadrunner service errors to pull ahead, 2-1 in the match.
Facing a six point deficit midway through set four, the Cougars turned it on and tied things up at 18-all with a kill from Jay Bynum. After a see-saw battle, Jared Warner gave Kean the lead for good with a kill and Nico Mercadante ended the night with a kill to pull away with the win.
Capp finished with seven kills, seven digs, 16 assists, four aces and one block good for 11.5 points while Warner registered five kills, eight digs and four blocks.
The Cougars are in action on Friday as part of five matches on the week as they travel to Cairn University for a tri-match.
