 Hedler Tabbed ESPN Academic All-District

UNION, N.J. (5/8/08) - Senior shortstop Johanna Hedler (South Plainfield, N.J.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II second-team, as announced by College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday afternoon.

A four-time New Jersey Athletic Conference all-star and early childhood education major, Hedler has also been named the Kean University Female Scholar-Athlete the last two years and was tabbed the NJAIAW Woman of the Year for Kean earlier this year. 

The four-year starter at shortstop was also a member of Kean's charter induction class of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, and earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition after the 2007 Cougar softball team posted the 33rd highest cumulative grade point average of the more than 400 NCAA Division III schools that sponsor softball.

On the field, Hedler is the program's all-time leader in runs scored (118) and is tied for first in career triples (10), while also ranking among the program's all-time career leaders in hits (180 - 2nd), homeruns (11, T2nd ), doubles (38 - 4th) and RBI (82 - 5th).

This season, Hedler currently leads the team in hits (49), is second in runs scored (31) and walks (19), tied for second in doubles (16) and is fourth in batting average (.327) and RBI (25). 

The Cougars earned their first bid to the NCAA Division  III Tournament for the first time since 1995 and for the fifth time in the 36-year history of the program.
