Cougars Close Out 2009 Season

Union, N.J. (5/9/09) - Senior Samantha Horner (Newfield, N.J.) drove in a game-high four runs as #3 Richard Stockton College eliminated #1 Kean University, 11-4, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Stockton (27-14) got things going in their half of the first as Horner singled home the first run of the game.  Two more would come around and score without the benefit of a hit.  Freshman Ally Roma (West Long Branch, N.J.) recorded an RBI sac bunt while junior Booy Erbig (Brick, N.J.) tallied an RBI groundout.

After adding two in the second on a two RBI single by Horner, the Ospreys tacked on a single run in the top of the fifth as Erbig singled to leftfield to give Stockton a 6-0 advantage.

Kean (19-21) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as senior Jesse Buchanan (Washington Twp., N.J.) (pictured right) launched her second homerun of the season, a three-run shot.

That would be as close as the Cougars would get as the Ospreys plated four more in the sixth.  Junior Kelly Dodd (Linwood, N.J.) recorded two RBI with a single up the middle in the inning.

Sophomore Brittany Giacomelli (Vineland, N.J.) earned the win for Richard Stockton.  Giacomelli (7-1) tossed a complete game allowing four runs and seven hits.  Junior Cassie Shotwell (Dunellen, N.J.) suffered the loss.  Shotwell (11-12) allowed ten runs, eight earned, and 11 hits in five and a third innings.
