Softball Splits Non-Conference Twinbill with Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. (3/28/12) – The Kean University split a non-conference doubleheader with Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon, earning a 9-1, five-inning victory in the opener, before falling 8-5 in the nightcap. 

GAME ONE: Cougars Pull Away for 9-1 Win in Five Innings

Senior shortstop Alicia Banz was 2-of-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and rookie right-hander Courtney Yard (7-2) allowed just three hits, while striking out seven in the 9-1, five-inning victory.

The Cougars (9-5) wasted little time getting on board, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Banz led the game off with a walk and scored one batter later on the double by sophomore right-fielder Megan Cegielski

An inning later, the Cougars broke the game open with five runs to extend the lead to 6-0.  Sophomore catcher Jillian Martin had a RBI double and Banz followed with a two-run double, before junior second baseman Katie Schuh closed out the inning with a single to drive in a pair of runs.

Kean added a single run in the fourth inning on a run-scoring single by sophomore left-fielder Sandra Binkiewicz and tacked on the final two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Martin drove in two runs with a double down the right-field line. 

Martin (pictured left) finished 2-of-3 with three RBI and one run scored and first baseman Kelly Moorehead was 2-of-3 with two runs scored.  Third baseman Courtney Melchionna added two hits and one run scored. 

GAME TWO: Offense Lifts Valiants Past Cougars in Nightcap, 8-5

The Cougars fell in the nightcap, 8-5, as Manhattanville (7-8) rallied from a 5-2 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Valiants took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homerun by junior Alyssa Taylor.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Cougars scored all five of its runs to take a 5-2 lead.  Sandra Binkiewicz (pictured left) opened the scoring for Kean with a two-run homerun to also score Katie Schuh, who led the inning off with a single.  Courtney Yard and Kelly Moorehead followed with back-to-back doubles and Courtney Melchionna single to drive in Moorehead with Kean's fourth straight hit to open the inning.  Melchionna gave Kean a 5-2 lead, scoring on a double by Jillian Martin.

Manhattanville got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by freshmen Danielle DeAndrea and Laura Montalto to pull within 5-4. 

An inning later, the Valiants took the lead for good on a three-run homerun by junior Jessica VanGalen, scoring four runs in the inning for the 8-5 lead. 

Melchionna finished 3-of-3 with one RBI and one run scored for the Cougars. 

Kean has its home opener tomorrow, Thursday, March 30, against DeSales University.  The first pitch of the doubleheader is 3 p.m.
