Softball Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (5/6/13) – The Kean University softball team was awarded a four seed in the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Championship when the tournament bracket was announced Monday morning. The Cougars will take on DeSales University on Thursday at 1 p.m. in Montclair, New Jersey in the opening round.
Joining the Cougars and Bulldogs in the Montclair Regional are No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan College, the College of Staten Island, Roger Williams University, Farmingdale State College, Susquehanna University and host, NJAC Champions and No. 3 Montclair State University.
Kean has already played Susquehanna, Montclair, Roger Williams and DeSales earlier this season, including a doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs by scores of 7-1 and 14-5 on March 24.
Kean topped Roger Williams in a 12-11 slugfest and played Susquehanna close in a pair of tight games (4-3 and 5-3) at home on March 23.
Against Montclair State, the Cougars handed the then-No.1-ranked Red Hawks their first loss of the season in a 2-1 victory on April 20. Montclair won the other two matchups between the schools, including a 5-4 victory in the NJAC Championship game on Sunday. All three games between the two conference rivals were decided by one run.
The Cougars own a 27-17-1 overall record and reached the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship game for the third time in four seasons. Four NJAC schools – Kean, Montclair, Rowan University and The College of New Jersey – qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
2013 marks the eighth time that Kean has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in its 40-year history. In its last two appearances in 2010 and 2011, the Cougars combined to win four games and were one decision away from reaching the College World Series in 2010.
