Virginia Beach, Va. (5/19/17) – Freshman Hannah Hull produced in the circle and at the plate to help #1 Virginia Wesleyan College to a 3-0 win over Kean University in NCAA Super Regional action on Friday.
Hull improved to 28-2 on the season with the complete game shutout. Hull fanned 14 and allowed three singles.
At the plate she drove in what would be the game-winning runs with a bases loaded single up the middle in the sixth, driving in two runs. The Marlins (47-2) added insurance as rookie Madison Glaubke lofted a sacrifice fly to put the score at 3-0.
Senior Shannon McMahon (25-4) held her own through the first four innings and worked out of a jam in the fifth. With runners on second and third and one out, Jacqueline Riley shovel passed a squeeze attempt by VWC to Samantha Krakower who applied the tag at home for the second out of the inning, preserving the shutout to that point. McMahon then produced a groundout to Emily Sabo to end the threat.
Kean (35-9) had opportunities early as Caroline Ratti was hit to start the game and Sabo singled to put two runners on with no outs. Later in the inning with both runners in scoring position and only one out, Hull worked out trouble with a pop up and strikeout. The Cougars threatened again in the second with runners on first and third thanks to a walk to Krakower (pictured left) and single by Olivia Zengel. But Hull again used strikeouts to work out of the jam.
The Cougars will play Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 p.m. needing to win two games to advance.
