Stephens Captures NJAC Triple Jump Title; Named Co-Outstanding Female Field Athlete at Championships

EWING, N.J. (5/5/07) - Sophomore Sherene Stephens (Orange, N.J.) captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference triple jump title and was named the Co-Outstanding Female Field Athlete at the NJAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.  As a team, the Kean University women's squad finished in sixth place, while the men placed eight overall.  The College of New Jersey swept both team championships for the 10th straight year.

For the Cougar women, Stephens, sophomore Demeka Pressley (Trenton, N.J.) and senior Liz Bauer (Rahway, N.J.) accounted for all of the team's points.

Stephens' busy afternoon was highlighted by a school-record jump of 11.06 meters in the triple jump, as she also placed third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.48), sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.58) and seventh in the long jump (4.86 meters).  The sophomore, who has already qualified for the ECAC Championships in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles, earned 21 of the team's 47 points.

Pressley had a strong showing at the conference championships, as she placed in three events.  She finished second in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.13 meters to qualify for the ECAC Championships.  She also added third-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (26.51) and 400-meter dash (1:01.27).

Sophomore Jason Staggers (Jackson, N.J.) placed third in the long jump (6.50 meters) and was seventh in the triple jump (12.71 meters), nearly identical finishes to his third and sixth performances at the NJAC indoor championships.

Junior Nelson Stryker (Milltown, N.J.) placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.07 seconds to qualify for the ECAC Championships.
