Stephens Captures NJAC Triple Jump Title; Named
Co-Outstanding Female Field Athlete at Championships
EWING, N.J. (5/5/07) - Sophomore Sherene Stephens
(Orange, N.J.) captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference
triple jump title and was named the Co-Outstanding Female Field
Athlete at the NJAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at The
College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon. As a team, the
Kean University women's squad finished in sixth place, while the
men placed eight overall. The College of New Jersey swept
both team championships for the 10th straight year.
For the Cougar women, Stephens, sophomore Demeka
Pressley (Trenton, N.J.) and senior Liz Bauer
(Rahway, N.J.) accounted for all of the team's points.
Stephens' busy afternoon was highlighted by a school-record jump
of 11.06 meters in the triple jump, as she also placed third in the
100-meter hurdles (15.48), sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:13.58)
and seventh in the long jump
(4.86 meters). The sophomore, who has already qualified for
the ECAC Championships in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles,
earned 21 of the team's 47 points.
Pressley had a strong showing at the conference championships,
as she placed in three events. She finished second in the
long jump with a season-best jump of 5.13 meters to qualify for the
ECAC Championships. She also added third-place finishes in
the 200-meter dash (26.51) and 400-meter dash (1:01.27).
Bauer is a three-time placewinner in the javelin throw, as she
finished in third place with a toss of 31.47 meters. Bauer
also finished third in 2004 and was second in 2005.
Freshman Alvin Davis (Paterson, N.J.) was the
men's highest placewinner, as he finished second in the 400-meter
hurdles in a career best 55.20 seconds.
Sophomore Jason Staggers (Jackson, N.J.) placed
third in the long jump (6.50 meters) and was seventh in the triple
jump (12.71 meters), nearly identical finishes to his third and
sixth performances at the NJAC indoor championships.
Junior Nelson Stryker (Milltown, N.J.) placed
third in the 100-meter dash in 11.07 seconds to qualify for the
ECAC Championships.
Senior Brian Sims (Keyport, N.J.) finished
sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:15.11), while junior
Ryan Hebron (Middle Township, N.J.) placed seventh
in shot put (12.98 meters) and freshman Justin Schulte
(Pennsville, N.J.) was eighth in the 10,000-meter run
(41:57.22).
The men's 1600-meter relay team of Staggers, sophomore
Jason Guznay (Orange, N.J.), sophomore
Ezra Schwartz (Bloomfield, N.J.) and freshman
Reggie James (Willingboro, N.J.) finished seventh
in 3:45.85.
