San Juan, P.R. (12/21/16) – The Kean University women's basketball team suffered a 65-55 setback to Calvin College in the Puerto Rico Clasico on Wednesday.
Calvin, playing on a 10 day layoff, managed to edge the Cougars in the first quarter of play, 15-13.
Kean (7-4) opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, aided by five points from sophomore Marajiah Bacon to build a 20-15 lead, but Calvin (10-1) closed out the half on a 12-3 run capped off by a layup by sophomore Rachel Warners just before the first half buzzer. The bucket by Warners gave the Knights a 27-23 halftime lead.
Calvin bumped its lead up to 35-26 early in the third quarter but the Cougars ripped off 10 unanswered points (nine from the Bacon sisters) over the next two minutes to take a brief 36-35 lead. However the Knights scored eight straight and used free throws to take a 45-40 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Junior Ali Spayde helped push Calvin down the stretch, scoring 12 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Ma. Bacon finished with a team-high 19 points while Jaquetta Owens (pictured left) added 15 points in 24 minutes of action. Rookie De'Mean Bond brought down a team-high 14 rebounds.
Lauren Goldthorpe finished the game with a career-high 21 points and her first collegiate double-double for the Knights. Anna Timmer also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Kean returns home and will enjoy a short break before hosting Colby College on December 30th.
