UNION, N.J. (1/24/18) - Payce Lange finished with a career-high 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Kean University women's basketball team snapped their losing streak with a 69-60 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday evening.
De'Mean Bond totaled 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Cougars who improve to 7-11 overall and 4-8 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Ania Harrell finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Scarlet Raiders who fall to 7-12 overall and 2-10 in the NJAC.
Lange and Bond scored 21 of the Cougars 33 first-half points as Kean stretched their lead to as large as eight at 33-25 on a Latice Cunningham layup with 40 seconds remaining. The Cougars shot 44.1% from the floor in the first half as Kean held at least a seven-point lead twice in the opening stanza. Rutgers-Newark was held to just 33.3% shooting and never led from the opening whistle.
Newark opened the second half with a 6-1 run to cut Kean's advantage to 34-33 with 7:46 remaining in the third. The Cougars answered with a 20-5 run over the final 7:11 of the third quarter as Kean led 56-39 entering the final quarter. Lange scored eight, while both Cunningham and Emily Dominguez chipped in with four apiece during the run.
Newark made things interesting in the fourth, as the Scarlet Raiders went on a 15-4 run to cut the lead to 60-54 with 4:28 remaining. Lange scored four points down the stretch, while Cindy Foresta and Lorenzah Hammer knocked down free throws to push the Kean lead back to 11 with under a minute to play.
Cunningham finished with 10 points, seven assists and three steals for the Cougars. Nicole Skelly totaled 10 points and five rebounds in the loss for Rutgers-Newark.
Head Coach Mandy King and the Cougars will return to action in Mahwah, N.J. on Saturday, Jan. 27th, against the RoadRunners of Ramapo College at 1:00 p.m.
