UNION, N.J. (11/18/17)- Marajiah Bacon finished with 31 points, 10 steals and was named the Most Valuable Player as the Kean University women's basketball team captured the Kean Classic with a 72-67 victory over Cabrini University in the Finals of the Kean Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Miesha Bacon finished with 14 points for the Cougars who improve to 2-1 overall. Meghan Matthews finished with 17 points for the Cavaliers who fall to 2-1 overall.
An even halftime score proved to be indicative of how balanced the first half was. Kean shot 57.1% from behind the arc, while only shooting 29.4% from the floor. The Cavaliers, on the other hand, shot 44.4% from the floor and 77.8% from the free throw line, but didn't connect on a long ball in the opening stanza. Bacon and Casey Filiault combined for 24 of the Cougars 31 first-half points.
In the second half, Kean took a 48-41 lead, before Cabrini rallied with a 9-2 run to take a 53-50 lead on a three-pointer by Lexi Edwards with 8:08 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Bacon put the Cougars on her back in the fourth as the Neptune native scored 11 of her 19 second-half points in the final 8:08. Kean shot 69.2% in the final quarter and took their largest lead of the contest at 68-60 with 1:02 remaining. The Cavs were able to bring the lead down to four, but the Cougars salted away the game from the free throw line.
Lorenzah Hammer finished with six points and six rebounds, while Danielle Oakley finished with five points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Nomi Washington totaled 13 points, while Kate Lennon finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Head Coach Mandy King and the Cougars will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 21st in Montclair, N.J. against the #23 Red Hawks of Montclair State University at 6:00 p.m.
