Union, N.J. (2/27/13) – Junior Ciara Mastrodomenico netted a game-high five goals helping the Kean University women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 win in the season opener against Lycoming College on Wednesday.
Mastrodomenico added an assist in the win as Kean improves to 1-0. First year head coach Jordan Trautman earned her first collegiate coaching win in the process.
Lycoming (0-1) controlled the offense early and staked themselves to a 2-0 lead as rookie Savannah Fox and junior Amber Graybill each recorded goals in the first 10 minutes of action.
Kean turned the match around and would score eight uncontested goals over the next 19 minutes to push ahead, 8-2 at the intermission. Mastrodomenico tied things up with back-to-back goals and senior Lyndsey Cannon gave the Cougars the lead for good with 12:08 to go in the first half. Senior Kelly Bachovchin (pictured left) notched three goals in the run. With her second goal of the match at the 9:09 mark, Cannon etched her name in the Kean record book, with 285 career points.
The second half started out just like the first as the Warriors tallied two straight goals, the first by Graybill and the second from freshman Elizabeth Seitzinger with 23:07 in the contest. Lycoming kept chipping away, but could not get any closer than two goals the rest of the way. Kean sealed the win as Matrodomenico registered her fifth goal of the day, a free position goal, to put the Cougars ahead, 11-8.
Senior Stephanie Tocko finished the day with three assists as well as two draw controls and two groundballs. Graybill led the Warriors with two goals and an assist, along with a draw control win.
Senior keeper Jules Keeley tallied 12 saves in the win.
Lycoming held a 14-8 advantage in draw control wins while the teams were almost even in shots (26-25).
Kean returns to action on Tuesday, March 5th when they open New Jersey Athletic Conference action against #6 The College of New Jersey at 4 p.m.
