UNION, N.J. (4/6/13) – Captains Lyndsey Cannon and Julie Knodt combined for seven goals as the Kean University women's lacrosse team held off Mount Saint Mary College in a pivotal 10-7 Skyline Conference victory on Saturday. The hotly-contested matchup featured 11 ties and lead changes.
Kaileen Spadaro of Mount Saint Mary netted the game's first goal four minutes after the first whistle. The teams traded the first six scores for a 3-3 tie with seven minutes remaining in the low-scoring first half.
Marissa Santiago scored the game's first goal for the Cougars, and Knodt tied it up at 2-all with 18 minutes on the clock in the first.
Cannon (pictured left) began a three-goal run at 7:15 for the Cougars by scoring two-straight, and fellow captain Ciara Mastrodomenico added another for a 5-3 Kean advantage. The Knights scored the final tally of the period to make it a one-goal game at the break. In addition to their eight shots on goal, MSMC had three different shots ring off the post in the first half alone.
Knodt kicked off the scoring in the second period, but three unanswered goals by the Knights swung the lead back to their side with 13 minutes left in regulation.
It was Cannon who took matters into her own hands at that point; the Delran native tied the game at 12:46 and scored the go-ahead goal one minute later (both were unassisted). Stephanie Tocko and Knodt added insurance goals while Jules Keeley and the Cougar defense kept the Knights off the scoreboard for the final 13:44 to secure the victory.
Mastrodomenico won five draw controls for the Cougars, while Cannon was a defensive force as well; she caused five turnovers and scooped up six ground balls. Spadaro and Nicole Palmieri led the Knights with two goals apiece.
Kean will begin a three-game roadtrip on Thursday at Purchase College in a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference matchup.
