Farmingdale, N.Y. (4/25/13) – Top-seeded Farmingdale State used a strong surge down the stretch to pull away from the Kean University women's lacrosse team by the final of 17-9 Thursday afternoon in semifinal action of the Skyline Tournament.
With the win Farmingdale will face #2 Montclair State University in the championship on Saturday at noon. The loss ends the season for Kean as they finish with a 13-6 overall record, their most wins in a season since 2008.
The Rams (15-2) opened up a 5-1 lead in the first 5:09 before back-to-back scores by senior Lyndsey Cannon cut the deficit to 5-3. With 12:16 left in the first half, sophomore Alyssa Handel scored off the pass from senior Jillian Pironti to put Farmingdale State back up three, 6-3. Sophomore Nicole Marzocca scored a pair of Rams goals to increase the lead to 8-3 with 6:59 remaining in the first half. The Cougars responded by scoring the final two goals of the half on markers from senior Stephanie Tocko and junior Ciara Mastrodomenico to pull within three (8-5) at the break.
Junior Julie Knodt netted the pass off the feed from Mastrodomenico only 1:47 into the second half to pull Kean even closer at 8-6. Handel scored two consecutive Farmingdale State goals, before Cannon answered with a pair of Kean scores to again pull the Cougars within two, 10-8. Over the final 15:41 the Rams scored seven of the contest's final eight goals to earn a 17-9 semifinal victory.
