UNION, N.J. (3/5/14) – The Kean University women's lacrosse team scored 11 second-half goals to cement its 16-6 victory over Manhattanville College on Wednesday. The other side of the ball was also outstanding over the final 30 minutes, as the defensive corps allowed only two goals in the second.
It was Manhattanville that scored the first goal of the game, but the Cougars scored the next four unanswered. Ciara Mastrodomenico scored two and Meghan Schneck (pictured left) assisted on a pair during the run.
The Valiants scored next on a free position shot, but Kean's Maggie Brocklebank answered a minute later to keep the Cougar cushion at three. But the visitors scored the next two, making the score 5-4 at the 12:11 mark.
After combining for nine goals in 14 minutes, the two sides remained scoreless for rest of the half. There was little first-half flow, as the referees issued five yellow cards and called an additional nine fouls.
Mastrodomenico got the second-half scoring started with a curling play around the Valiant cage that resulted in an unassisted goal. One minute later, Jordan Blanda added another unassisted tally that forced Manhattanville to call timeout.
Kean kept on pushing out of that stoppage, as Brocklebank and Blanda both scored again as the Cougars turned what had been a close game at halftime into a comfortable lead.
Samantha Gnapp and Shelby Wallace lit the lamp for the first time, prompting another Valient timeout with 20 minutes to go and the score 11-4. But Kean kept up the pressure for the rest of the matchup. Blanda, Mastrodomenico and Brocklebank all finished with three goals to lead the Cougars, while Schneck added two goals and three assists.
Kean is now 2-0 on the year, while Manhattanville sank to 0-2.
The Cougars will remain at home and take on SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday at noon.
