UNION, N.J. (3/31/14) – Senior Ciara Mastrodomenico scored five goals and freshman Erika Hernandez won five draw controls as the Kean University women's lacrosse team hung on to win a tight 15-12 matchup with FDU-Florham on Monday.
The Cougars are now 6-3 on the year, while FDU fell to 3-7.
Carly Seidel netted a free-position goal less than one minute in to set the tone for Kean. The Cougars led wire-to-wire but the Devils threatened throughout the game.
Jordan Blanda knocked the ball in for the second goal with a golf-style swing off the ground in front of the crease. She then assisted one and scored another as Kean collected four goals in the first six minutes.
Mastrodomenico lit the lamp with 15:47 remaining in the first half and racked up two more goals in the period to earn a hat trick five seconds before the halftime horn.
Brienna Reasoner and Courtney Rendinaro had two goals each to lead the Devils in the first, while defender Caitlyn McGinley gave Kean first-half fits by causing three turnovers and scooping three groundballs. The Cougars were just 8-15 on clear attempts in the first 30 minutes.
Blanda (pictured left) and Mastrodomenico scored two quick ones out of the break to extend the Kean lead to 11-5, and Samantha Gnapp and Maggie Brocklebank hooked up 10 minutes later to give the Cougars their biggest lead at 13-6.
The Devils rallied in the final 14 minutes and scored five of the game's last six goals. Rendinaro finished with four to lead the visitors but it was not enough to get the tying tally past goalkeeper Daniella Wagenti and the Kean defense.
Blanda finished with five points to co-lead that category for Kean and also paced the squad with four ground balls. Julie Knodt scored a pair of goals for the Cougars.
FDU committed 21 fouls to Kean's five.
The Cougars will begin NJAC play on Saturday when the team hosts Rowan University at 1 p.m. inside Kean Alumni Stadium.
