Evelyn Alfaro is entering her ninth season as the head coach of women's tennis at Kean University. Alfaro became the Cougars' 10th head coach in program history when she was hired in the summer of 2004.
The Cougars arguably had their best season in her tenure in 2010 after recording an 11-3 overall record, the program's first 11 win season since 1999.
Prior to her arrival at Kean, Alfaro was the head women's and assistant men's tennis coach at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., where she guided the Ducks to the Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and Independent Athletic Conference (IAC) team championships in 1996, and was named the WIAC Coach of the Year. During her two-year tenure as head women's coach, seven of her players garnered all-WIAC honors and one was named the IAC Player of the Year.
Alfaro is at a rated level 4.5 by the United State Tennis Association. She has served on the board of directors of the Arlington Players Club, a private tennis club in Kearny, N.J., and was a four-time singles and doubles champion at the club (1993, 1996, 1999, 2001). Alfaro was also a member of the 4.0 USTA tennis team in Longwood, N.J., that won the regional championships in 1995 and from 2001 through 2004.
A first-grade teacher for the gifted and talented at the Edward T. Bowser School in East Orange, N.J., Alfaro was named the Teacher of the Year for the 2006-2007 school year. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in advertising from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and a Master of Arts degree in education for administration from St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J.
Jodi Valenti returns for her seventh season as an assistant coach under Evelyn Alfaro.
A four year player for the Cougars, Valenti still holds the record for wins in a season with 20 (including tournament play) in singles competition.
Valenti received her Bachelor of Arts degree in health and physical education from Kean University in 2003 and is currently a physical education teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in Bergen County, N.J.
Laura Giordano joins the Cougar program for her first season in 2012.
Giordano comes to Kean with a broad background in strength and conditioning and personal training. As a student-athlete, she was a four year member at Ithaca College, and was a captain during her senior campaign.
Giordano received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Ithaca in 1982 and earned her Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from Queens College in 1989.
