Union, N.J. (10/13/12) – The Kean University women’s volleyball team picked up another two wins on Saturday as they won the Kean Invitational by topping Polytechnic Institute of NYU and Alvernia University.
In this morning’s action, Kean topped Alvernia in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-8. The Cougars were led by junior Kaitlyn Hansen, who tallied a game-high 11 kills on 19 swings (.526), while adding six digs and six blocks. Freshman Rachael Wells contributed with three kills, four aces and three blocks while sophomore Jen Espinal registered six kills and nine digs.
In their final match of the day, Kean earned a 3-1 win over Polytechnic Institute of NYU (25-21, 23-25, 25-8, 25-12). With the win, the Cougars reach the 20 win plateau for the second time in the last three seasons. Hansen was tied with teammate Aysia Peterson for game-high kills with 12. Senior Samantha Sacco added 16 digs while sophomore Alix Denison added six kills, seven aces and six digs.
For their efforts, Sacco and senior Amanda Gonzalez were named members of the All-Tournament team, while Hansen earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Kean returns to non-conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Baruch College.
