RIVERDALE, N.Y. (9/1/16) – The Kean University women's volleyball team topped The College of Mount Saint Vincent in four sets on Thursday to open the 2016 season. The Cougars dropped a tight first set 23-25 but won the next three to seal the victory.
Freshman Jesse Larkin, playing in her first collegiate match, led the Cougars with 13 kills and a .650 attack percentage on the night. Sophomore defensive specialist Juliana Romero dug out 22 balls and Kendall Sonico handed out 40 assists and hit .500 on 12 attacks with a team-best four aces to boot.
Kean racked up nine total blocks on the night; Larkin (pictured left) was in on eight of them, including two solo stops.
Vikki Stec and Joelle Tondi just missed season-opening double-doubles, racking up 13 and 12 digs, respectively, to go with nine kills each. Sara Ridgway and Brett Harper had eight kills apiece as well.
Tara Maloney led the Dolphins with 19 kills on 53 attempts. Thursday marked both squads' first match of the 2016 season.
Kean will be back in action on Saturday for the first day of the Morrisville State Tournament against Norwich University and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts beginning at 1 p.m. in Upstate New York.
