Pitching Powers Baseball Past Widener, 4-2

Union, N.J. (2/21/18) – The Kean University pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts on the day to help propel the Cougars to a 4-2 win over Widener University on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Southpaw Ian Fitzgerald picked up the win after fanning 11 in his season debut.  He scattered two hits while allowing just one run.  Rookie Daniel Chiusano earned his second save in a week with a two inning performance.  He struck out three while allowing no runs and no hits.

The Cougars (3-0) scratched across a single run in their first at-bat as Jimi Fitzgerald crossed the plate on a Pride miscue.

Kean added two more in the third all with two outs.  Nick Polizzano got things going with a double (one of two for him on the night).  John Carello drove in one with a bases loaded bunt single and freshman Brandon Johannessen made it 3-0 with a bases loaded walk.

Carello added a single RBI in the sixth to give Kean a 4-0 lead but the Pride (0-1) answered back and broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth.  Dylan Peiffer produced a two out RBI single.

Widener started off the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs.  Chuisano entered and induced a pitcher's best friend, the double play ball, making it 4-2.  He finished the job with a laser to first on a bunt attempt to escape trouble.  Chuisano fanned the Pride in order in the top of the ninth to earn his second save in his second appearance.

Polizzano was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two doubles.  Carello was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Kean returns to action on Friday when they host SUNY Old Westbury.
