Baseball Survives Elimination with Ninth Inning Run to Defeat William Paterson

UNION, N.J. (5/4/18)- Frank Urso scored the game-winning run in a wild bottom of the ninth inning play as the fifth seeded Kean University  baseball team fended off elimination with a 5-4 victory over the sixth seeded William Paterson University in the 2018 NJAC Baseball tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars improve to 20-22 overall, while the Pioneers finish their season at 23-16 overall.

Kean surrendered a two-run lead with a three RBI double from Francis Deane as William Paterson took their first lead of the afternoon at 3-2. The score remained the same into the seventh when back-to-back RBI's from Chris Vetter and Jimi Fitzgerald put the Cougars back in front at 4-3 entering the ninth.

In the ninth, the Pioneers evened the contest at 4-4 with a solo home run to left field from Shane Adams.

The Cougars scored the winning run in the bottom half of the inning without tallying a hit. Urso reached on a throwing error to start things off and then stole second during the next at-bat. Steve Santigate advanced Urso to third with a sacrifice hit, before two consecutive intentional walks to Vetter and Fitzgerald, loaded the bases for Brandon Johannessen.

Johannessen reached on a fielder's choice and Urso scored the winning run after the throw home from the third baseman sailed wide of the catcher and allowed the senior to cross the dish.

Fitzgerald went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Nick Polizzano went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Christopher Rossi improved to 4-2 on the mound with four strikeouts in the complete game victory.

Head Coach Neil Ioviero and the Cougars will return to action tomorrow, Sat. May, 5th, against an opponent to be determined at 12:00 p.m.
