Union, N.J. (2/17/19) – Senior Ian Shaffer drove in five with two homers as Alvernia University picked up their first win of the season by defeating the Kean University baseball team 9-4 on a frigid, windy Monday afternoon.
Shaffer was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an intentional pass.
The Golden Wolves (1-1) took an early 3-0 lead after four innings of play. Alvernia scratched across a single run in the second with the aid of a Cougar miscue and plated two more in the fourth with Shaffer's first homerun of the afternoon.
Alvernia got those two runs right back in the top of the sixth as Nathan Sides drove in one on a bases loaded single and Matt Briner recorded an RBI with a sac fly.
The runs came right back to Kean as the Cougars again got within one in their next at-bat. Phil Marcantonio recorded his first collegiate hit, a double, with one out to get things going. Tyler Hopman and John Carello would load the bases after a walk and hit batsmen. Two more walks to Walker and Marzano pushed the score to 5-4.
Shaffer then put the game away in the seventh with his second homer of the afternoon, this one a three run shot with two outs.
Mike Cirilli and Gaven Blankenbiller each had three hits on the day for Alvernia. Starter Zack Landy pushed through for the win. He tossed five and a third innings allowing three runs and seven hits. Kyle Gaynor earned the save with three and a third innings of two hit, shutout ball.
Marzano finished the day with two hits and two RBI for Kean.
The Cougars enjoy a short break and return to action on Friday when they host SUNY Old Westbury.
