Port Charlotte, Fla. (3/10/19) – The Kean University baseball team defeated #5 Swarthmore College by the final of 8-7 in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon in the Snowbird Classic.
It was a see-saw affair that saw a combined 15 runs and 28 hits. Trailing 4-3 heading into the fourth inning, the Cougars (8-3) opened the game up with a four spot. Highlighting the inning was a two-run blast by Carello, his first of the year.
Kean held on to the 7-4 advantage until the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Swarthmore (1-2) pushed across a run on a controversial balk. Mike Sepe added another with an RBI single and the tying run scored after an overthrow to the cutoff man on Jared Gillen's double. Kyle Gaeb worked out of his own jam with a strikeout to end the threat.
Gaeb worked into and out of trouble in the 10th and 11th and sealed the win while facing four batters in the 12th. He improved to 3-0 with the four inning relief effort. He struck out five, walked six, two intentional, with four hits and two runs allowed. Tyler Hopman received a no-decision after tossing seven innings allowing three earned runs and one walk with six strikeouts. He allowed 13 hits.
In total the Cougar pitching staff worked into and out of trouble, stranding 21 runners left on base.
Offensively Frank LoGiudice was 4-for-5 with two RBI while Carello was 1-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a homer.
For Swarthmore, Gillen was 4-for-8 from the leadoff spot with one RBI and one run scored, he was left on base six times.
