Port Charlotte, Fla. (3/12/19) – The Kean University baseball team edged La Roche College by the final of 3-2 on Tuesday night.
The #24 Cougars (10-3) never trailed as Kean pushed across the game's first run in their first at-bat. John Carello got things going with a 10 pitch at-bat that led to a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice and third on a single from pitcher Frank LoGiudice. Nick Polizzano's sac fly gave Kean a 1-0 lead.
The score would remain that way until the seventh as both pitchers were locked in. The Redhawks plated an unearned run after Dylan Urban reached second on a throwing error. A groundout moved him to third and a sac fly from Shane Roebuck tied things up at one-all.
Kean plated two runs in their half of the eighth for what would hold up as the winning run. Derek Walker walked with one out and moved to second on a balk. LoGiudice singled to right to put runners on the corners and would later swipe second. Polizzano would reach on an infield single after hustling to an uncovered first base, but an errant throw trying to get him would send Walker for a 2-1 lead. With runners again on the corners, Polizzano swiped second, but an errant throw to third to try and catch LoGiudice on the same play, would give Kean what would be the game-winning run.
La Roche got one back in the bottom of the eighth with a hard hit infield single but Zachary Marzano entered with one out and proceeded to strike out the next two batters to get out of a jam.
Marzano would pitch into and out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth, stranding the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second.
LoGiudice (2-1) allowed one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Marzano earned his second save of the season in one and two thirds innings of work.
Offensively LoGiudice was 2-for-4 with a run scored while Polizzano and Chris Vetter each had two hits.
Kean closes out the trip with a morning contest against Marietta College on Wednesday.
