Union, N.J. (4/18/19) – The Kean University baseball team completed the series sweep by defeating Montclair State University by the final of 9-7 on Thursday afternoon.
Kean improves to 23-11 this spring and 9-3 in the NJAC while MSU falls to 10-21 overall and 1-10 in conference play.
The Cougars pushed across a single run in the second as Zachary Marzano led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a balk and came around from second on a wild pitch to score.
The Red Hawks took their first lead of the past two days with a two run fourth inning. Andrew Ollwerther and Chris Walker starting the inning with a single and double respectively. Justin Bates used a groundout to tie things up and Hayden Reyes gave MSU the lead with an RBI single.
In the see-saw action, the Red Hawks took the lead right back with four runs in their half of the seventh. Brody Labbe connected for a two RBI triple while Donald Gonnelli added an RBI single and Ollwerther notched an RBI double.
The Cougars clawed back with one in the bottom of the same inning as Frank LoGiudice drove in John Carello who reached on a leadoff single in the gap and moved all the way to third on a throwing error.
Kean took the lead for good in the eighth as Mike Perone Jr. registered a two out, two RBI double. LoGiudice added insurance with an RBI infield single.
LoGiudice was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Walker finished with two hits and two runs scored.
For the Red Hawks, Labbe was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Reliever Justin Hernandez (1-0) picked up the win for Kean as he tossed two and two thirds innings allowing one earned run and three hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Kean returns to action on Saturday when they square off against Rutgers-Camden at Jim Hynes Stadium at noon.
